# Assign a Temporary Access Code

Use this procedure to assign a Temporary Access Code when a user needs to authenticate but cannot access their primary authenticator.

Default Temporary Access Code lifetime, expiry, and maximum uses are controlled by your IDaaS authenticator settings. For more information, see [Modify Temporary Access Code settings](/docs/authentication-and-security/manage-authenticators/manage-temporary-access-codes/modify-temporary-access-codes.md).

### Assign a Temporary Access Code

1. Click Menu icon **>** **Members** **> Users**. The **Users List** page appears.
2. Click the **User ID** for the user you want to assign the Temporary Access Code. The **User Details** page appears.
3. Click the **Authenticators** tab. The **Authenticators** page appears showing a list of authenticators assigned to the user.
4. Click Circle Plus icon. A drop-down list of authenticators appears.
5. Select **Temporary Access Code**. The Temporary Access Code is added to the user's authenticator list.
6. On the user's **Authenticators** page, click Ellipsis Vertical icon and select Eye icon **Details**. The **Temporary Access Code Details** page appears.
7. Copy the text in the **Code** field. This is the temporary access code. Share the code with the user.
8. Click **OK** to close the **Temporary Access Code Details** page.

note

You cannot create more than one Temporary Access Code per user. To create a new code, first delete the user's current Temporary Access Code. To delete it, click Ellipsis Vertical icon and select Trash icon **Delete**, then click **Delete** on the confirmation prompt.

### Validate your changes

After assigning a Temporary Access Code, validate the result.

1. Confirm **Temporary Access Code** appears in the user's authenticator list.
2. Confirm the **Code** value is visible on the **Temporary Access Code Details** page.
3. Confirm the user can authenticate with the shared code.
4. Confirm usage and expiry behavior follows configured policy limits.
